deadwitchwalking“I stood in the shadows of a deserted shop front across from The Blood and Brew Pub, trying to not be obvious as I tugged my black leather pants back up where they belonged. This is pathetic,I thought, eyeing the rain emptied-street. I was way too good for this.” This is the first paragraph of what I thought was going to be another attempt at merging two world into one that has only been done a couple of times.

Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison is a Mass Market Paperback 432 pages long published by Eos in April 2004. It’s hard to put a genre on it as it covers more than one. It is a fantasy novel with detective, horror and mystery added to it’s flavor.

The book takes place in “The Hollows” of Cincinnati sometime after “The Turn”. The nicest thing I can say about the book is that Ms. Harrison does not go into Michener-like detail about her world. It’s starts off like a detective story and continues from there, giving the reader enough information when needed to keep them interested. Ms. Harrison’s world has Vampires, Witches and all other sorts of creatures living amongst normal humankind, and not always on the most friendly of terms. Let’s meet a few of the folks that inhabit this world.

Rachel Mariana Morgan — Red hair and freckels. Five foot eight inches tall and the herone of the book. She starts as a “Runner” for Inderland Security and ends up self employed.

Ivy Tamwood — Six feet of sexy Vampire. Coal Black Hair and pale skin. Rachel’s roommate and business Partner.
